Computer memory: what configuration is best?

I hold a mother board with 4 memory slots. At present holding 2X 512Mb PC3200 DDR RAM. I am wondering whether to:

a) attain another 2X 1Gb PC3200 DDR RAM (filling all the slots),

b) buy 2X 1Gb PC4000 DDR RAM and removing the older PC3200 chip. This way I would enjoy faster memory, but less of it.

Any thoughts on what is best to do?

Ram runs quickest when spead across the most amount of modules.

So you would be better stale buying the 2 x 1gb 3200 ram, going away you with 3Gb. You'll never catch sight of the difference between Pc3200 and PC4000 anyhow to be honest.

Don't mix speeds of ram, because it's running on matching bus it will all solely operate as fast as the weakest connection IE the Pc3200, so your 4000 will be wasted.
Why dont you

draw from 2x 1Gb extra ram PC 4000

set the PC 4000 sam within slot A of the mem board

& the PC 3200 RAM in SLOT B

i.e.

the strike should fit in close to

1.1G 4000

2 512 MB 3200

3.1G 4000

4.512 MB 3200

giving both speed (4000 will work at 400 Mhz & 3200 at 333 Mhz) as well as space.
Read the instruction manual of the mother board. Some times, there are 2 slots for one humane of ram and 2 more slots for a different style of ram. Older mother boards have slots for DDR ram and after slots for SDRAM.

You can't mix the two.
The easiest way to digit all this out is to hold the program at Crucial analyse it. Run http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/...

It will detail all your option.
